Person centered therapy and psychotherapy for individuals wanting change

I use person centered therapy skills in individual counselling to help you change your life and deal with those issues troubling you. Carl Rogers is considered the founder of Person centered (also known as client-centered) therapy, and the godfather of what are now known as “humanistic” therapies. It’s important to use this Rogerian approach as its emphasis is on meeting each person in their own unique world, rather than assuming the counsellor know best. In Rogers’ own words:

“It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried. It began to occur to me that unless I had a need to demonstrate my own cleverness and learning, I would do better to rely upon the client for the direction of movement in the process.” – Carl Rogers

Working with your own individual circumstances

By working with your own individual circumstances, viewpoint and experience, using person centered therapy skills, I am able to help you deal with a wide range of problems. These include:

  • anxiety and depression
  • grief, despair and loss
  • twin issues and lone twin bereavement
  • stress and stress related disorders, PTSD
  • motivational issues,  feeling stuck and lost, lacking direction
  • self esteem
  • identity conflicts
  • negative self talk
  • parenting issues such as dealing with the teenage years
  • life after kids, separation issues
  • past trauma, abuse and neglect
  • cancer related issues such as survivorship, end of life, body image, intimacy.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
–Carl R. Rogers, On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy

Individual counselling using person centered therapy skills is a special space to explore those issues that are stopping you enjoying your life. It’s a private space to maybe say those words and look at stuff you’ve never dared face before, but know is there. Allowing yourself this time is about making a bid for your own well being.  By taking this step you are making a commitment to yourself, you are saying: “Hey, I am important too!”

Person Centered Therapy – Testimonials

“I did not think that counselling could have such a positive impact on how I felt and acted with family and friends. Knowing I was not happy but I thought that was how it would always be. I felt cold and empty. There are people who care about me and I care about them. I thought I was okay. Finally, I accepted that maybe I could be happier. I contacted the Cancer Council for help. Wen has guided the healing that allows me to be genuinely alive and happy while still acknowledging the death of my husband. I felt like half a person without him. Now – I enjoy life and cherish our memories.”

–Mrs Deborah Murray (North Avoca, Central Coast)

“Wen has been an amazing listener and has helped me a lot in the short time I have been in contact with her. She has taught me the importance of working through my trauma and experiences rather than burying them and how to properly handle my feelings in a more healthy way. After each appointment with Wen I feel as though a weight has been lifted and I know that she really listens to what I have to say and gives amazing advice and reassurance. Wen is very patient, understanding and offers great advice and I couldn’t recommend a more amazing counsellor. Thank you for everything.”

–Alisha Zarb (Melbourne, Victoria)

“I have been seeing Wen for some time now and she has helped me deal with anxiety and learn self-care. Her kind and caring nature instantly helped to develop a relationship where I felt comfortable to explore the root cause for my worries. Wen has taught me how important it is to look after myself and that well being starts within. Thank you so much for all your help Wen.”
